ALEXANDRIA,VA (WUSA-9) --- Organizers estimate more than 25 hundred persons attended a fund-raising auction Sunday afternoon for Alexandria Police Officer Peter Laboy, who was shot in the head during a traffic stop last month.
The suggested donation was $10, but many offered far more as they entered the building, walking past a picture of Laboy in his Alexandria Police uniform.
Asked for an estimate of how much money was raised, organizers said the amount had not been tallied but pointed out that several auction items brought more than a thousand dollars each.
Police have arrested a cab driver, and charged him with shooting Laboy.
Police Chief Earl Cook told WUSA-9 that Laboy is making progress in what will be a difficult recovery and that doctors are encouraged.
One of Laboy's five children stood outside the auction, next to his father's police motorcycle, wearing a Superman tee shirt in honor of his dad. "He is Superman," he said.
