ANNANDALE, Va. (WUSA) --  To some, a modern-day mafia sounded as if it came out of a Hollywood movie script.

"Very surprising," said ICE special agent in charge John Torres. "This case had it all, extortion, violence."

It started in 2006 in the Korean enclave in Annandale. According to court documents, the black-suit clad Korean Night Breeders, as they were called:

  • Beat up one victim to the point where "one of his eyes was swollen shut;"
  • Brought underage drinkers to bars, got them drunk and then would tell the owners of the bars that if they did not pay money, they would call police;
  • Used extorted money to buy drugs like marijuana and crack cocaine.

The Korean American Association of Northern Virginia tried to step in and help. Member Ray Park was tasked to talk with "Thunder." The community collected donations for a new apartment for Yu and his brothers if they would find real jobs. But Park says the gang returned to its old ways and ended up threatening him.

"He said he wouldn't leave me alone," said Park. "Basically watch out."

Yu entered a plea deal last year. He is serving 17 and a half years in jail. He was also ordered to pay close to $100,000 in restitution.
