WISE, Va. (WUSA) - Reports of a gunman at the University of Virginia's College at Wise was a hoax, officials say.

Virginia State Police say shortly before 9 p.m. a UVA-Wise student called 911 to report he saw a gunman on the campus. The school was then immediately put on lockdown and UVA-Wise Police, Town of Wise Police, Wise County Sheriff's Office, Town of Pound Police, and Virginia State Police began searching the university.

Two alerts were sent to students via text and email saying, "Hunker Down. Gunman on campus" and "Lockdown continues. Alleged gunman on campus. Stay put. Lock all doors until further notice," The Bristol Herald Courier reported

While officials searched for the gunman special agents with the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation's interviewed the student who made the 911 call.

The student eventually confessed to officers that it was a hoax and the lockdown was lifted.
