FALLS CHURCH, Va. (WUSA) -- A Falls Church home burst into flames Thursday, claiming two lives.
Fire investigators have not determined a cause. Washington Gas employees have been on site for most of the day.
While the medical examiner is in the process of identifying the badly burned bodies, neighbors and friends say that a mother and daughter were renting the house on Manor Road near Oak Ridge Road in Falls Church.
Neighbors also say the two were hearing-impaired and that the mother, Laura Snyder Gardner was a teacher at Gallaudet University. Her daughter Mary Ann was a junior in high school on the Gallaudet University campus.
Steve Klass says he was woken up by what he says sounded like an explosion and he heard the mother scream.
"I heard my neighbor scream twice, not long intense screams but I heard her scream and I recognized her voice," he said.
Fire investigators say two dogs and eight cats perished. The cause of the fire has not been determined yet.
Official identification may come Thursday.
