ROANOKE, Va. (AP) - A federal judge has refused to block next week's execution of a Virginia man who strangled two inmates and vowed to keep killing unless he was put to death.

U.S. District Judge Glen Conrad ruled late Thursday against former attorneys for Robert Gleason Jr. who claimed he was no longer competent to waive his appeals. They had asked to be re-appointed to Gleason's case and for a new mental health evaluation. Two others deemed he was competent.

Conrad ruled the attorneys had no authority to make the request and that they failed to show his competency had deteriorated.

Gleason is scheduled to be executed Wednesday for killing his cellmate in 2009, then strangling another inmate as he awaited sentencing. He promised to continue killing unless he was executed.
