FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (WUSA) -- A Metro bus driver was taken into custody on Wednesday morning in relation to the murder of Jose Cardona in Fairfax County.
Forty-three-year-old Stacy Lorenzo Reed of Manassas, Va. was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals on Wednesday morning without incident at the Pentagon Metro bus stop.
Metro released the following statement:
"Stacy L. Reed has been a Metro employee since August 19, 2012. He was arrested without incident this morning by US Marshals in the presence of Metro Transit Police. Mr. Reed has been relieved of duty. As this is an active investigation, we refer all further questions to the US Marshal Service."
The U.S. Attorney's Office says Reed is accused of conspiring to commit a Hobbs Act Robbery. Reed is expected to appear before a judge at the Alexandria federal courthouse Wednesday afternoon.
According to the affidavit, on May 17, 2010 two armed men went into a mansion on Compton Road in Centreville, Va. and were confronted by Jose Cardona, who worked at the home as a handyman, and the owner's son. There was a struggle and Cardona was shot and killed.
In June 2012, Reynard Lazaro Prather was sentenced to 30 years followed by three years of supervised release for killing Cardona. Prather pleaded guilty in February to conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery, use of a firearm in a crime of violence, and use of a firearm in a crime of violence causing death in the crime.
Authorities said Prather conspired with two men to rob the owner of a check-cashing facility at gunpoint at the owner's home in Centreville. The conspirators believed the owner kept the store's money at the home. Authorities say on May 17, 2010, Prather and Tasheik Ashanti Champean drove to a shopping center in Virginia so a third man could drop them off at the owner's home. Champean pleaded guilty to the charge of "use of a firearm in a crime of violence causing death" on Monday.
Reed is believed to be the man who drove them to the home, according to the affidavit. Someone else drove the men from the home. When authorities located the car believed to be involved in the incident, the car was registered to Reed.
According to the affidavit, cell tower records show phones linked to Reed, Prather and Champean were used near the strip mall and the home on May 12, 2010.
We will have more details here as they become available.
