ROSEAU, Dominica (WUSA/AP) -- The mother of a University of Virginia student who was killed during a visit to the Caribbean island of Dominica, made a statement on Monday.

Margo Schulman said that Casey Schulman of Falls Church, Va. was a "shining light and the kindest, most caring person. She and her sister were best friends; they were equally kind to each other. We are the luckiest and most blessed family to have had them both."

Twenty-year-old Casey Schulman of Falls Church, Virginia was struck by a dive boat's propeller on Saturday afternoon as she and more than 50 other students visited the island as part of "Semester at Sea."

Police spokesman Richmond Valentine said Sunday that Schulman and fellow students went snorkeling on a boat owned by a local dive shop. He says the captain was apparently reversing the boat when its propeller hit Schulman, who was swimming.

She was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

In a statement the president of Semester at Sea said,  "We wish to convey our condolences to Casey's family, her many friends, and those who witnessed the accident."

Schulman graduated with honors in 2009 from Jeb Stuart High School in Falls Church.
