Dentist Hamada Markarita Of Oakton, Va. Convicted Of Illegally Distributing Narcotics, Identity Theft And Health Care Fraud

OAKTON, Va. (WUSA) -- A dentist from Oakton, Va. was convicted on Friday to illegally giving prescription pain pills to patients, workers, and a woman he dated. Fifty-one-year-old Hamada Markarita was also convicted of using another dentist's identity to fraudulently bill an insurance company for more than $160,000 in claims, saysNeil H. MacBride, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Makarita was convicted of conspiracy, health care fraud, aggravated identity theft charges, and five counts of dispensing controlled substances.  

When he is sentenced on Feb. 15, 2013, Makarita faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison on the health care fraud charge, 20 years in prison for conspiracy and each dispensing controlled substances charge, and a two-year sentence for the aggravated identity theft charge.

Makarita owns a dental practice in Oakton, Va. and advertised online at According to court documents and evidence at trial, since 2007 Makarita illegally distributed and dispensed prescription medicine such as Fentanyl, Vicodin, and Valiu  to patients, employees, and at least one girlfriend without a legitimate dental purpose. He told the recipients to return some or all the prescribed medicine to him. 

On several occasions, Makarita distributed prescription pills to patients and at least one girlfriend in social settings and for sexual purposes. According to officials, Makarita once took explicit photographs of a girlfriend who was unconscious and under the influence of alcohol and Vicodin.

The jury also found on Friday that Makarita gave more than $160,000 in services to his family members and billed them to an insurance provider, which violated provider's contract. He billed the services under  another dentist's name who did not work at his practice. Makarita received more than $91,000 in reimbursement for the fraudulent claims.
