LORTON, Va. (WUSA) -- Before students at South County Middle School get to enjoy their brand new building they have to get there. It's no small feat on a day that's been nicknamed Terrible Traffic Tuesday. After a nice summer break, Tuesday marks the return of the worst traffic in the entire country.

According to AAA, here's what you can expect on the roads on Tuesday:

  • 2.8 million commuters in the D.C. area.
  • About 2 million students that will need to be transported to and from school.
  • And more than 7,000 school buses.

AAA's John Townsend says, "The traffic will increase by 26% over what the level of traffic and gridlock was during the summer months. So you can expect a 26% increase in traffic and the bulk of that - Ground Zero - will be around 9 o'clock when the parents finish ferrying their kids to school."

So what that 26% increase in traffic overnight means is that the average commute in the DC-area will jump from 20.4 minutes of traffic delays per day to 25.8 minutes. That's more than five minutes tacked on to your commute every day.

To make matters worse, Tuesday night the Washington Nationals have a 7o'clock home game against the Chicago Cubs. So expect even more terrible traffic around Nats Park.
