ARLINGTON, Va. (WUSA) -- The victim of a fatal hit and run Tuesday morning on northbound Route 110 and I-395 has been identified as Robert Shepard, 62, of Lawrence, Mass.
A witness called to report seeing a vehicle on the side of the road with a pedestrian in the road just before 6 a.m. Tuesday. By the time police officers arrived at the scene, the vehicle was no longer there. There is no description available of the vehicle.
Police continue to investigate the accident. Police say he was hit at "a high rate of speed" and was thrown approximately 60 feet.
Two lanes of Rt. 110 northbound were shut down. One lane was getting by in the southbound lanes. The ramp from Rt. 110 to southbound Washington Boulevard is blocked.
Shepard was a veteran and from Massachusetts, we are told. He was reported missing and endangered by his girlfriend. Due to a health issue, he was considered "endangered" but we do not know at this point if the issue was physical.
At the time of the collision, Shepard was wearing fatigues and construction boots.
