WASHINGTON, D.C. (WUSA) ... The Smithsonian National Zoo has a new addition. On October 13, three-year-old dama gazelle Zafirah gave birth to a female calf, who made her first public appearance on October 24. The newborn was presented at the Cheetah Conservation Station's mixed species exhibit. Dama gazelles are listed as “critically endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Fewer than 500 are estimated to remain in the wild. Check out photos of the newborn in the gallery above.
