WASHINGTON (WUSA9) --  Later Tuesday, Apple is expected to unveil the latest versions of its iPhone. With that fresh crop of new devices comes the question: what to do with the old ones?

You have a bunch of options when it comes to re-selling your smartphone. First, consider the condition of your phone. You'll get more cash if it has less cosmetic damage.

For people in big cities, selling a popular device like an iPhone can probably be done locally, through a site like Craigslist. This avoids fees like shipping if you meet in person to make the exchange. You also get the money straight away if you do this deal in cash.

Those looking to resell outside of their immediate area can consider sites like Gazelle, U-Sell, or Ebay. Major carriers like AT&T, Verizon and Sprint all have recycling programs for old devices. They can either be refurbished and sold at a discounted price, or recycled for their plastic, metal and glass.

Regardless of the option you choose, you'll definitely want to wipe the smartphone clean of your personal data before handing it over. Back-up your contacts, photos, music and documents first.  Then restore the device to factory settings. If you are talking about an iPhone, you'll find that under settings --> reset --> "reset all settings."
