TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - A far-reaching plan to reconfigure Rutgers University in Newark, New Brunswick and Camden will get a fresh look when its costs are revealed Monday.
Sen. Donald Norcross says the long-awaited price tag - which he acknowledged as the "800-pound gorilla" in the plan - should be available when the legislation gets its second public hearing.
The costs, which have taken weeks to calculate, include one-time administrative fees of combining schools and perhaps hundreds of millions in fees for refinancing the institutions' existing debt.
The legislation calls for combining Rowan and Rutgers-Camden in new partnerships focused on health science education, transferring the University of Medicine and Dentistry to Rutgers and giving UMDNJ's School of Osteopathy to Rowan.  University Hospital in Newark would operate as a nonprofit.
