WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- One after school program teaches children how to make formal dinners, and we met the woman behind it all.

Classy Kids Cook is a summer camp and after school program where measuring ingredients is just the beginning. Tessy Medley spent two decades in the financial services industry and decided to give it all up to follow her dream. Out of a garden level condominium in D.C., she teaches kids life skills through her love of cooking.

"They learn math, the measuring, they learn to cook, which is a life skill, they learn generosity, because when they are cooking they are cooking for other people," said Medley, the founder of Classy Kids Cook.

They also learn knife skills, hosting duties and the proper way to set the table.

According to the USDA, when kids learn how to cook, they make healthier eating choices later in life.

Registered dietician Lorraine Butler told us, "In the short term, they tend to eat more of a variety of foods so they choose to try healthy foods they might to have tried ....in the long term if you learn how to cook it make a positive impact on your diet."

It seems to be working.

"The only thing I know how to cook before I came here was scrambled eggs," said Leeza Predovsky.

Now Leeza says her new knowledge makes her think of becoming a chef one day.

And Anya, who is 5 (and three quarters), has it down.  She knows how to make fettucini alfredo and how to set the table.

What's really cool is that Classy Kids Cook students are being featured in a USDA video on healthy eating. With pupils like Anya Pedrovsky, it's sure to be a hit!
