HANOVER, Md. (WUSA9) -- An Annapolis sailor, HM2 Nick Azzaro, returned home Friday night after an 8-month deployment.
But instead of wearing his whites, he became a knight in shining armor to surprise his wife at Medieval Times in Hanover.
Azzaro is used to wearing a uniform.
He's been in the Navy for eight years and he just returned from his fourth deployment. But the Medieval Times armor is a uniform he will only wear for his wife of six years, Erin Azzaro.
"We dated for about a year-and-a-half, and she stuck with me through a deployment so I figured she really liked me!" said Azzaro.
As Azzaro suited up, Azzaro admitted that his wife typically does not like surprises.
"I'm excited, anxious, speechless," said Azzaro.
The plan was for Nick to "knight" his wife while his face was concealed by a helmet. But the problem was, she didn't want to be knighted. As Erin Azzaro's friends dragged her to the front, she told the knight, "It is not my birthday!"
When Azzrao finally took off his helmet, Erin burst into tears and the crowd cheered.
"It was amazing," said Erin Azzaro. "I don't like surprises, but I'm not mad at him. I'm so happy."
Azzaro had been deployed in the Horn of Africa where he'd been providing medical support in the War on Terror.
