WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- Leaders of both parties had great praise on Veterans Day for one of the country's most decorated veterans: former CIA Director and retired Army General David Petraeus. But Petraeus' accomplishments notwithstanding, most lawmakers agreed that Patraeus simply had to go after the FBI uncovered an affair he was having with Paula Broadwell, a 40 year-old West Point graduate who wrote a biography of Petraeus that was published early this year.

On Sunday, it was learned that the FBI discovered Petraeus' affair with Broadwell while investigating claims by Jill Kelly that Broadwell was sending Kelly threatening emails. The 37 year-old Kelly, an unpaid social liaison to Macdill Air Force base in Tampa, Florida -- where Kelly lives and where Petraeus once worked-- has declined to talk publicly about the scandal, except to say that she and her family have been friendly with Petraeus and his family for more than five years.

According to CBS News, Petraeus claims that his affair with Broadwell lasted less than a year, beginning at the end of last year, just after he became head of the CIA, and ending about four months ago

Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein, head of the Senate Intelligence Committee, she said she intends to hold hearings into why, for several months, the FBI kept her committee mostly in the dark about their investigation.
