ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA) -- A former army ranger has been sentenced to 28 years in prison for killing his roommate, announced John J. McCarthy, State's Attorney for Montgomery County.

Gary James Smith, 29, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter and 18 years for use of a handgun in the commission of a felony crime.

On Sept. 26 of 2006, police arrested Smith in the shooting death of his roommate, 22-year-old Michael Anthony McQueen the second, who had just returned from three tours of duty in Afghanistan in their Gaithersburg apartment.

"Today's sentencing reflects the conduct of Mr. Smith in the death of Mr. Queen and during his brief incarceration prior to this hearing. Making a shank and fermenting wine in jail showed his true colors to Judge [Eric] Johnson," McCarthy said.

Smith was convicted in the murder of his roommate in 2008.
