DENVER (KUSA) - Life is often about waiting: The anticipation, the excitement, the angst. At Denver International Airport, this is extremely evident.

Jason Walter is a Lieutenant in the Colorado Army National Guard, assigned to the 220th Military Police Company.

He contacted me on my Facebook page last week, and instantly tugged at this woman's heart strings. He told me he was going to propose to Marilu Sandness - his girlfriend of nearly four years - when she returned from her ROTC training.

The couple met at the ROTC program at the University of Northern Colorado almost four years ago. They have a 14-month-old daughter together named Accalia.

"I've known I wanted to marry her for a while," Walter said. "When she was going to leave for this training, I knew the perfect moment was going to be when she came back to the airport. Unfortunately, I had to wait the whole month and pretty much day by day."

Who doesn't a love a sweet story like this? Photojournalist Chris Hansen and I went with Walter to wait for the surprise at the airport Tuesday night.

"I don't think I've ever been so nervous in my life," he said. "I'm shaking pretty good and [my hands are] not usually purple."

Walter had a friend on the plane, who happened to be coming back from training together with Sandness. His friend was texting Walter updates.

"It says, 'just touched down.' It's from my informant, who's on the same plane," Walter said.

Before long, Sandness was greeted by Walter's parents and their daughter. Walter had told her he'd be out at training. So, imagine her surprise when he walked out and got on one knee.
