ARLINGTON, Va. (WUSA) -- Marine Lance Corporal Niall Coti-Sears from Arlington was laid to rest Thursday at Arlington National Cemetery. The 23-year-old was killed last month in Afghanistan.
Coti-Sears grew up in the District and Northern Virginia, and he attended Woodrow Wilson High School. His mother is a fourth grade teacher at John Eaton. In the weeks before he deployed to Afghanistan, Coti-Sears came to his mother's classroom and taught her students about what it means to be a marine.
He was supposed to return home from his first deployment in October, but he was killed while conducting combat operations in the Helmand Province. His family says he was killed by an IED. Fellow marines at the funeral say he'd considered joining the Navy Seals. But he never did because, like his grandfather, he loved being a Marine and an infantryman.
Aside from the Marines, his other great love was music. He played both the piano and the guitar. Before joining the Marines in 2008, he attended The Levine School of Music in Northwest Washington. Therefore, his family is asking that anyone wishing to make a donation to send it to The Levine School of Music.
