10 injured in Montgomery Co. apartment fire

SILVER SPRING, Md. (WUSA9) -- A fire that burned through the roof of a Silver Spring apartment complex left 10 injured, officials say. 

The Montgomery County Fire Dept. said seven residents and three firefighters were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. 

Nearly 40 firefighters arrived at the two-alarm fire on Tuesday at approximately  3:43 p.m. Tuesday at the  9300 block of Piney Branch Road, officials said. 

Officials say an electrical socket near a bed caused the mattress to catch on fire. There are more than 100 residents displaced. The fire took more than 2 hours to put out. 

Current, damage estimates are up to $1 million to the structure and $500,000 to contents, officials said.
