COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP/WUSA9) - Montgomery County collected 111 weapons during Saturday's Gun Turn-In event, Montgomery County Police say.

There were three sites in Montgomery County and 24 around the state where people could voluntarily turn in their weapons.

Montgomery County preliminary numbers indicated that the following weapons were turned in:

  • 69 handguns
  • 27 rifles
  • 15 shotguns
  • In addition 1 grenade, 11 BB guns, 1 sword, and approximately 10,000 rounds of ammunition were turned in.

The attorney general's office said any type of firearm was accepted during the first annual statewide gun turn-in day. The weapons didn't need to be working, but they had to be unloaded before being turned in.

"Organizers of the event will be making a donation for each gun turned in to the University of Maryland Medical Center's R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center," police said.
