LANDOVER, Md. (WUSA9) -- Family, friends and colleagues said goodbye to a D.C. Police Officer Saturday afternoon.

Police say Detective Joseph Newell was shot to death by his stepson on Monday in a dispute over yard work.

The Metropolitan Police Department Ceremonial Honor Guard served as pallbearers. There was a strong showing from the rest of the force including Police Chief Cathy Lanier.

"He's one of the most loved detectives in the police department. He has a lot of friends, family and support," Chief Lanier said.

Joseph Newell's wife was surrounded by her children as she said goodbye to her husband of less than 2 years. They were practically newlyweds.

"You could tell they loved each other, nothing but love for each other."

Police say 27-year-old Antwan Rayvon James shot his stepfather at their Upper Marlboro home after they got into a dispute over yard work.

Prosecutors say detectives found 15 shell casings at the scene.

Newell was a homicide detective and a 24-year veteran of the Metropolitan Police Department.

Within that time, he helped solve the murder of Sheila Hill's grandson.

"I had to pay tribute to the man who solved the crime and a family friend," she said.

Seventeen-year-old Julian Agurs was walking with his friends in 2008 when he was killed in the crossfire.

Sheila Hill has felt indebted to Newell ever since they found her grandson's killer.

"My whole being, my life. The man had integrity. I've known him since childhood. But to solve my grandson's murder I say thank you, Jesus. Thank you for him. Thank you."

Newell leaves behind 6 children and 5 stepchildren including the one who's now charged with his murder.

"He spent his whole life protecting other people and keeping them safe. He lost his life the same way he spent his life protecting others," Chief Lanier said. "It's devastating for us in law enforcement. It's the hardest thing to understand. "

Detective Newell will be buried next Wednesday at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetary.

His stepson, Antwan James, is being held without bond on first degree murder.
