ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- A puppy snatcher is on the loose.

Rockville City Police say a woman walked into a pet store and acted as if she wanted to buy the Maltese puppy but instead walked out of the store without paying for it.

The tiny pup was snatched from Just Puppies pet store in the Twinbrook Shopping Center, 2004 Viers Mill Rd., in Rockville, at 5:30 p.m. on April 12.

Police say it was caught on tape. They say the woman is seen holding the puppy in the playroom and when she sits down stuffs the Maltese in her purse and walks right out.

Mara Fain was helping the woman out that day.

"I was helping other customers and she just disappeared. I've never seen anything like it."

Employees never suspected the woman. But now they're worried about the health of the puppy that's about 2 months old and under 2 pounds.

"I don't know if it's still alive. A lot of puppies under three pounds have hypoglycemia problems.  Their sugar drops like diabetics and if they don't get that sugar they can develop seizures."

Michelle Beach, "It's insane why would you steal a dog in a pet store it's crazy."
If you see the puppy or recognize the woman in the video call Rockville City Police at: 240-314-8938.
