TAKOMA PARK, Md. (WUSA9) -- Thursday morning, a dog lost its life after being attacked by two other dogs while out on a walk, say police.

According to Takoma Park Police, at approximately 8:00 a.m. a woman was walking her dog in the unit block of Philadelphia Avenue when they were approached by two loose dogs. Police say the dogs began to attack the woman's dog. The woman's dog later succumbed to its injuries, according to police. The woman was not harmed.

Officers were able to contain the attacking dogs after they retreated into their yard and were secured by their owner, say police.

The owner is charged with allowing the dogs to be at large and allowing the dogs to engage in unwanted contact, which are $100 and $500 fines respectively, say police.

Police also said in an updated press release that "The dogs are being declared potentially dangerous which means that when they are off the owners property they have to be leashed and under the control of a person at least 18 years old who is physically capable of restraining them. They also must be micro chipped and we are adding the restriction that they must be muzzled whenever they are off the owner's property. "

The investigation is being handled by Montgomery County Animal Services.
