(WUSA9) -- St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office authorities have released more information on a fatal accident involving a school bus from Friday morning.
Authorities say 46-year-old Dennis Anthony Gingles of Lexington Park was driving a 2005 Hyundai southbound on Point Lookout Road when he illegally passed two vehicles on the southbound shoulder. They say there he lost control and over-corrected his vehicle, causing it to spin sideways. The Hyundai then crossed the southbound lane and entered the northbound lane, hitting a northbound International School Bus, say authorities.
The bus, driven by Sandra Marie Adkins of Lexington Park, had eight Great Mills High School students on board, according to authorities. They were traveling to the Dr. James Forrest Career and Technology Center in Leonardtown, say authorities.
Authorities say that Gingles was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. Gingles died from his injuries at St. Mary's Hospital.
The driver of the school bus and the students weren't injured, say authorities.
Authorities say speed is a contributing factor but are asking that anyone with information about the collision call Sgt. Edward B. Evans 301-475-4200 Ext. 9018.
