(WUSA9) -- Anne Arundel County Police say they have charged a Broadneck High School teacher after she allegedly exchanged sexually explicit text messages and photos with a student. Police say 28-year-old Erin Nicole Thorne of Arnold, Md. also allegedly engaged in sexual activity with the student, but only after the student turned 18 years old.

Thorne is charged with one count of Display Obscene Matter to Minor and one count of Child Porn Solicit Subject. Police say she turned herself in to the police station at 1 p.m.

Police say their investigation started last year when an anonymous caller contacted the Anne Arundel County Public School system about a possible inappropriate relationship between a Broadneck High School teacher and a student. Anne Arundel County Public Schools started investigating and placed Thorne on administrative leave, according to police. Interviews with students revealed that she may have had an inappropriate relationship with a male student, who graduated from the high school in 2011, according to police.

Police detectives then took over the investigation, and learned from the former student that he and the teacher formed a friendship during his senior year, say officials. During the fall semester, Thorne allegedly began sending him sexually explicit text messages. Later, the two, talked regularly on the phone, according to police.

Police say that according to the investigation, Thorne and the male continued to exchange sexually explicit text messages and images at her request before the student was 18 years old. They also say that Thorne and the male were engaged in sexual activity after the student turned 18 years old.

Officials with the school system sent a letter to parents on Tuesday. In the letter, officials say Thorne, who was an English teacher and former basketball coach, has had no contact through the school system with students since being placed on leave and that "the board of Education will be receiving a recommendation that Ms. Thorne be suspended pending termination from employment with AACPS."
