COLUMBIA, Md. (WUSA) -- A man is accused of exposing himself twice in two months at the mall in Columbia, Md. say Howard County police.
Forty-nine-year-old Steven Michael Lerer of Burtonsville was arrested Wednesday night after reportedly exposing himself inside the mall.
Police say the first incident happened on Jan. 13. A woman told police she saw a man acting suspiciously, staring at and following a group of girls near the food court. She told police the man was carrying a coat over his arm, hanging in front of his pants. As he walked by her, she saw his genitals were exposed and he was touching himself.
Police started to investigate the case and released of surveillance photos of the suspect, but they were unable to identify the man.
Then, on Wednesday at approximately 9:30 p.m., a mall housekeeping staff member saw a man standing near the food court with a jacket covering his genital area. When the man turned, the staff member saw his genitals were exposed and he was fondling himself. The staff member reported the man to mall security. The man was then detained until police arrived at the mall.
Police say officers recognized him and that he had the same jacket the suspect was carrying in the surveillance video. Lerer was arrested and charged with two counts of indecent exposure.
Lerer posted a $7,500 bond and was released, according to police.
Police are also investigating a third incident of indecent exposure near the movie theater next to the mall the mall Feb. 10. In that case, two girls were near the movie theater when they saw a man in a vehicle who lifted himself up off of the seat and exposed his genitals. Police are working to determine whether this case involved Lerer.
