BALTIMORE (AP) - Baltimore police say there have been 24 shootings in the city so far this year, double the number there had been this time in 2012.
The most recent shootings occurred just before 11 a.m. Tuesday. A 17-year-old girl was fatally shot and a 19-year-old man was wounded as they sat in a pickup truck in an alley.
Police Commissioner Anthony Batts describes the violence as a "slight spike" and says the department is responding. He says he thinks he has the right strategy in place to combat Baltimore's stubborn violence.
There were 217 homicides in Baltimore in 2012, an increase of 20 from the previous year.
Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says investigators believe the shootings on Tuesday were drug-related.
