SILVER SPRING, Md. (WUSA) -- Montgomery County Police say that a man who died after an officer-involved shooting in Silver Spring had a replica handgun. The man has been identified as Tracy Woodfork of Bladensburg.

Captain Paul Starks, spokesman for the Montgomery County Police Department, says officers responded to the area of Woodland Drive and Flora Lane around 3:15 Monday morning after receiving a 911 call from a 22-year-old man threatening to hurt himself and possibly others. Police say that during the conversation, the man said he wanted to kill himself and that he wanted police to kill him. According to police, they were able to find him using cell phone records and by contacting his family members.

When officers arrived on the scene at approximately 3:17, they discovered Woodfork on the back stairwell of a locked home where the man's girlfriend was babysitting three children. They tried to get him to put down his gun and come up from the stairwell.

Police instructed the girlfriend to keep the door locked. According to Captain Starks, officers were able to distract the suspect in the rear of the home while others were able to sneak the woman and children out of the front of the house.

At approximately 5:03 a.m., police say Woodfork started to walk up the stairs with his gun. "There was an encounter and the man was shot," say police.

The Woodfork was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. On Monday morning, we were told that he had passed away.

The officers involved in the shooting are on paid, administrative leave.
