MARBURY, Md. (WUSA) -- A Charles County man will serve 17 years in jail for killing his roommate last New Year's Eve after an argument turned violent.
George Tanner of Murbury had pleaded guilty to second degree murder in the death of Luther Russell Huffman. On Tuesday, a judge sentenced him to serve 17 years.
Tanner told police that the argument last New Year's Eve had turned violent, and that he had knocked Huffman to the floor of their apartment before repeatedly kicking and stomping his face, torso and the back of his head. Tanner was wearing steel toed boots at the time. Tanner also told police that he left Huffman moaning on the floor and went to sleep.
When he woke up, Tanner reportedly found Huffman lying in the same spot on the floor with a large blood stain around him. When Tanner found that Huffman was unresponsive, he panicked and tried to clean up the stain with dishwashing soap and a white towel. But blood had soaked completely through a throw rug and the section of carpet.
Tanner threw the towel away and then visited a relative to tell him about the fight before going back home to call police. When authorities arrived at the apartment, Huffman was pronounced dead.
