WASHINGTON, D.C. (WUSA) - The big question for those who oppose illegal immigration is if they can challenge the President's decision in court or through the ballot box.

President Obama's decision to allow young undocumented immigrants to remain in the country by deferring their deportation and granting them work permits if they behaved legally- is angering those who support a hard line on illegal immigration such as Brad Botwin who spearheaded the drive to repeal Maryland's Dream Act.

But outside the White house, jubilation as scores of students celebrated the chance to live the American dream and make a difference
Dream Act supporter Ives Gomes said, "Most of us are here because we want to pursue our education, we want to pursue our future and we want to give back to this country." Ives said that he lives "with my cousin who has muscular dystrophy and there's nothing more that I'd like to do than work to find a cure for his disease."

Immigration experts told 9News Now they believe the President has the authority to grant this blanket deferred deportation status because it's essentially what immigration prosecutors do on a case by case basis. They also believe that having work permits helps these students secure a status that qualifies them for in-state tuition as long as they meet all the other criteria regardless of whether the Dream Act is repealed.
