TAMPA, Fla. (WTSP) - Scientists have discovered a natural compound in palm oil that can kill breast cancer cells.
The compound, called tocotrienol, is extracted in its natural form from palm oil, from Vitamin E.
Dr. Mokenge Malafa, Chair of the department of GI Oncology at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, is studying palm oil and says this is promising for all people in the whole spectrum: patients who want to prevent it, high risk of getting it. And for those who have it, he says combining this with standard treatment could improve the way the treatment works.
"It will also help with leading a healthy life." says Dr. Malafa. "If you wanted to get the benefit to get the compound, you cannot consume palm oil. To get the type of concentration it needs to be extracted and put in a pill form."
Companies are working on extracting these vitamins.
Dr. Malafa says it is too early to recommend this, it needs more studies. But he says, "There are studies on going and testing it in labs and mice and it is showing very promising results."
The next step is clinical trials.
