WASHINGTON (AP) -- DC officials plan to increase the number of beds available to homeless people by 10 percent in the wintertime in an effort to reduce cases of hypothermia.

Advocates for the homeless, however, are worried that even with the increase, there won't be enough beds, as the economy remains troubled. Even though demand is usually low in the summer, space is scarce at shelters.

There are 703 homeless families in Washington, a 20 percent increase over last year. More than 1,400 are children, according to a survey by the Metropolitan Council of Governments.

From Nov. 1 to March 31, D.C. will have available at least 75 more family beds and hundreds of beds for individuals.

The plan was announced at a public hearing on Thursday.
