Police have arrested a former Army sergeant in the shooting death of his roommate, who had just returned from three tours of duty in Afghanistan. Twenty-four-year-old Gary James Smith was charged with first-degree murder in the death of his roommate, 22-year-old Michael Anthony McQueen the Second, in their Gaithersburg apartment in September. Montgomery County Police say the motive is still unknown. McQueen's father, Mike, says his son served with Smith at Fort Benning, Georgia, where McQueen was an intelligence specialist and Smith was a sergeant. Mike McQueen, who's chief of the New Orleans bureau of The Associated Press, says his son was slated to leave active duty last month and was looking forward to life outside the Army.
