WASHINGTON (AP) - District of Columbia public school students will get new musical instruments, books, computers, art supplies and science lab equipment thanks to $10 million in funding that had been left unspent.

The Washington Post reports that the school system announced the purchases this month, including 4,000 instruments, 2,000 desktop computers, more than 1,300 laptop and tablets and 85,000 new books for school libraries.

Officials say the money was unspent because of vacant jobs going unfilled and reduced benefits costs.

Chancellor Kaya Henderson says it's an example of the school system putting its resources into the classroom.
