DULLES, Va. (WUSA9) -- Officials say a Culpeper man was stopped by TSA agents at Dulles airport on Tuesday night for having a loaded gun in his carry-on bag.
An officer at the checkpoint X-ray machine spotted a handgun in the man's bag and contacted the Washington Airports Authority police, officials said.
Police confiscated the handgun, which they say was loaded with 11 rounds.
The man was cited on a state weapons charge. Police say he was going to fly to Colorado Springs.
Weapons including firearms are not permitted in carry-on bags but can be transported in checked bags if they are unloaded, properly packaged and declared to the airline.
Passengers who bring firearms to the checkpoint are subject to possible criminal charges from law enforcement and civil penalties from TSA.
