WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Today, we get word that DC Mayor Vincent Gray and the City Council are prepared to defy the US Congress and keep all city workers on the job, even if the federal government shuts down. That would of course violate the law and I've got only one thing to say about that sort of behavior.
Bring it on!!
Heck..not only is Mayor Gray absolutely right when he says its ridiculous the city can't spend its own dough to keep its own government running, but residents here pay billions in taxes and have no voting representation in congress and a showdown over the shutdown would be our best shot in years at getting anyone to take notice of that injustice.
To be fair, over the decades a few elected leaders and passionate activists have tried to keep the fire burning but their idea of radical protest was printing those taxation without representation license tags. And getting the President to put one on his limo. Nice. But it pales next to the image of city elected leaders facing down Uncle Sam in a confrontation that would put all of the relevant issues front and center.
Who should control DC's money and why can't the city have budget autonomy? And what about the central irony here, that residents of the Nations Capitol pay and live and fight and die over laws they have no say in creating. Let's be real, this has gone on for so long with so little progress, most of us may not even notice any more. Its about time we got reminded.
