NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - A coal ship pollution case has gone to a federal jury in Norfolk.

The case involves the Maltese-flagged Antonis G. Pappadakis. During an April inspection, a crewmember passed a note to Coast Guard personnel claiming the vessel's oily water separator had been bypassed and that oily bilge water had been discharged.

The ship's owner, Malta-based Angelex Ltd., operator Kassian Navigation Agency Ltd. and chief engineer Lambros Katsipis are charged with conspiracy, falsification of records, obstruction of justice and other counts.

The Virginian-Pilot (http://bit.ly/16odE3S) reports that jury deliberations began Thursday and are scheduled to resume Friday.

The ship and 16 crew members have been detained at the Portsmouth Marine Terminal since April.
