(WUSA9) -- Kids swapped bathing suits for backpacks Monday morning. For children in Fauquier, Frederick, and Prince George's counties Monday marked the end of summer and the the first day of school.
First day jitters were in the air at Bladensburg Elementary for frightened little ones to parents who fight back tears. but it's not only the children going through changes this year. The county school system is being revamped, starting with the County Executives take-over and starting HIS first day along with the students is new schools chief Doctor Kevin Maxwell
Leading the second largest school system in the state, and one of the worst performing, is a challenge not for the weak of heart. So while change is scary for everyone involved, the county exec says it's the only way to begin turning these schools around.
