WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Summer travel can be a hefty investment.  So, it feels good once you find a great deal on a vacation getaway.

But before you even leave home, our WUSA 9 Call For Action partner Shirley Rooker says it's also a good idea to invest in travel insurance.  But, she cautions, you need to choose wisely.

"Travel insurance may be a good idea if you have invested a considerable sum in your upcoming vacation, especially, if you are taking a cruise which may have a very restrictive cancellation policy," says Shirley Rooker.

For example, consider whether you are likely to become ill during a trip.  Rooker says, "If you are young and healthy and traveling to areas close to the U.S., you may not need insurance with health benefits.  However, older travelers or people going to far flung destinations may find it a good idea."

There are several types of medical insurance you could consider when it comes to choosing travel insurance.

"One type of coverage will airlift you to within 30 miles of your home.  This type of insurance can be especially important if you have a life threatening illness or you are traveling in a third world country with poor medical care.  Another type of insurance will cover your medical expenses if you go outside the U.S. and beyond the boundaries of your coverage," Rooker says.

The WUSA 9 Call For Action expert says, "Choosing travel insurance will require you to take a hard look at your trip."

Ask yourself, "What are some of the reasons you may not be able to make the trip.  Make a list and compare the items to the insurance you are considering to make sure all the possibilities are covered in the policy," says Shirley Rooker.

In the end, Rooker says, "You may choose to buy insurance that protects against loss if something happens that prevents you from traveling.  It could be a death in the family or an illness."

And be aware that some providers may ask you to provide verification form your physician that you or a family member is unable to travel.

There are some polices that exclude coverage of preexisting conditions.

Are You Covered If Your Summer Vacation Is Interrupted

And most importantly, before you buy a travel insurance policy, check it out to see whether it will cover and protect against cancelling for any reason or if the coverage is more limited.
