SILVER SPRING, Md. (WUSA9)-- Cheryl Kravitz of the Red Cross National Capital region is giving tips on how to increase your chances of staying alive during violent storms like tornadoes.
She says everyone need to plan before hand, and a few simple steps should take care of the preparedness.
Kravitz encourages everyone have emergency kits that include first aid supplies as well as other medications. The kit should also have things like batteries and flashlights, and ofcourse food and water.
Kravits said , "It's easy and important to have it and know where it is", about the emergency kits.
Just before the twister hits she says you should go to the safest and sturdiest room in your house. In many cases, that means a basement or a cellar.
After the storm she advices you don't go exploring because it is dangerous. Instead, if cell phone service is adequate she encourages people to use smart phone apps that are made specifically for post storm operations. For example, the Red Cross's app includes strobe lights, flashlights, alarms, and a message alert system to tell people you are safe and point out where you are.
