Davie, FL (Sports Network) - The Miami Dolphins took another splash into the free-agent pool on Saturday, signing onetime Pro Bowl cornerback Brent Grimes to a reported one-year contract.

According to, the deal is worth a total of $5.5 million with $3 million guaranteed.

Grimes had spent his first six NFL seasons with the Atlanta Falcons and earned a Pro Bowl citation in 2010 after intercepting five passes and recording 23 passes defensed. The 29-year-old is coming off a 2012 campaign in which he played in just one game before tearing his Achilles tendon.

Atlanta's designated franchise player in 2012, Grimes had come up with 12 interceptions and 50 passes defensed over the three seasons prior to last year's injury-shortened one.

"We are very excited that we were able to reach an agreement with Brent," said Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland. "His experience and history of play making production will add a great deal to our secondary."

Grimes becomes the latest addition to a revamped Miami squad that has been the league's most active on the free agent market. The Dolphins struck big deals with wide receiver Mike Wallace and linebackers Dannell Ellerbe and Philip Wheeler earlier this month, while also bringing in tight end Dustin Keller, wide receiver Brandon Gibson, guard Lance Louis and defensive lineman Vaughn Martin.

Grimes is expected to replace 2012 starter Sean Smith, who signed a three- year, $18-million contract with Kansas City.
