Kris Jenkins & Marquis Wright Named Gatorade Boys' Basketball Players Of The Year

WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- This week, Gonzaga's Kris Jenkins (Washington, D.C.) and North Point's Marquis Wright (Waldorf, Md.) were named Gatorade Boys' Basketball Players of the Year

Winners were selected from each state based on athletic production and impact in season as well as high academic achievement and exemplary personal character.

See why Jenkins and Wright stood out both on and off the court this year.

KRIS JENKINS, WASHINGTON, D.C.

The Basics:

School: Gonzaga College (Washington, D.C.)
Grade: Senior
Position: Forward
Height: 6-foot-6
Weight: 250 pounds


Athletic achievement: He averaged 18.3 points, 10.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 3.3 steals and 1.4 blocks per game, leading the Eagles (27-5) to the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference quarterfinals and a third-place finish at the annual Alhambra Catholic Invitational Tournament. Jenkins averaged 19.8 points, 10.6 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 3.9 steals and 1.2 blocks as a junior. The two-time WCAC Player of the Year has participated in the NBPA Top 100 Camp each of the past two summers.

Academic excellence: Jenkins has maintained a B average.

Exemplary character: In addition to donating his time as a youth basketball instructor, he has volunteered locally on behalf of a homeless shelter and as a tutor for elementary school children.

THE PRAISE

"He is, simply put, a winner, making his teammates constantly better," said Neil Berkman, head coach of rival Bishop Ireton (Alexandria, Va.). "He exemplifies good sportsmanship, works hard and seems to have very high character. Off the court, he carries himself with class, dignity and a matureness way beyond his years.

THE FUTURE: Jenkins has signed with Villanova.

MARQUIS WRIGHT, MARYLAND

The Basics:

  • School: North Point (Waldorf, Md.)

  • Grade: Senior
  • Position: Point guard
  • Height: 6-foot-1
  • Weight: 180 pounds

  • Athletic achievement: He averaged 16.6 points, 6.1 assists, 4.7 rebounds and 3.9 steals this past season, leading the Eagles (24-3) to the Class 4A semifinals. A two-time Southern Maryland Athletic Conference MVP, Wright concluded his high school career with 1,084 points, 560 assists, 325 rebounds and 290 steals as a four-year varsity player.  

    Academic excellence: Wright has maintained a 3.08 GPA.

    Exemplary character: A devoted parishioner in his church community, he has volunteered locally as a youth basketball camp counselor.

    THE PRAISE

    "Marquis Wright is a very cerebral point guard who has all the tools to lead a college team," said Dale Lamberth, head coach at Thomas Stone (Waldorf, Md.). "Having competed against his team over the past four years, I have seen tremendous growth in his leadership and skills on the court."

    THE FUTURE: Wright has signed with Loyola.
