WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- After the white smoke cleared and the curtains were pealed back in St. Peter's Square, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina emerged.

There were cheers heard around the world as well as scouting reports on the man now known as Pope Francis.

He is a conservative theologian by all accounts. He is a man who fights for those without a voice, and he has dedicated his efforts to appealing to the millions of catholics who have become disenfranchised by the church.

But there is something else he stands for that is stirring up concern. This pope is anti-gay, and LGBTQ community members around the world are now sounding off on their worries that the new pontiff will halt much of the advancement they have enjoyed in recent times.

Daniel Barutta, the President of Dignity Washington a Catholic Congregation whose members are mostly gay and lesbian said, He has not been good on LGBT issues."

In fact, Pope Francis has openly criticized Argentine political leaders who have legalized gay-marriage and gay-adoption in that country.

Francis has gone on the record to call that kind of legalization the work of the devil. Francis was quoted as describing it as a "destructive attack on God's plan."

Barutta says he will remain cautiously optimistic about what the future holds of gays and lesbians under this pope ideologies.

Barutta said ,"We're going to continue to say we are important, and we have a lot to offer the church and hopefully the Pope will listen to us."

Will the Pope's attitudes toward gays change? Well, if the past is prologue, probably not. But, many never expected a Pope from Latin America either.
