WASHINGTON, D.C. (WUSA9)-- Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has ordered a probe at all day care facilities in his department to determine if some staff members have criminal backgrounds that make them a threat to children in their care.

This all started in September at Fort Myer in Arlington, Va., when a Seat Pleasant, Md., woman Sharon Blakeney was caught on video, allegedly punching, pinching, pushing and pulling on several small children under her care.

She was arrested by the FBI and charged with simple assault.

A background check concluded that the 47-year-old child care worker should never have been hired.-

All 130 workers at the Fort Myer Child Development Center were looked at and it was determined by the Army investigators that 22 more employees had criminal records that should have eliminated them from employment as well.

The Army ordered that investigators now be done at all 283 child development centers to determine if still more people should be let go because of their criminal histories.

Secretary Panetta, after learning about the Army probe, ordered that every Child Development Center in his department be included in the investigation, which means international sites as well, to determine if people should be let go because of their criminal histories.
