WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- This winter season many children in the D.C. area just won't make it to school because they just don't have a warm enough winter coat.

Operation Warm and the International Association of Firefighters in D.C. plan to distribute 1,000 new coats to area children.

Carey Palmquist joined us on Thursday morning to talk about why a new coat is important to a child and where you can drop off a coat.

One million children have been helped since Operation Warm started in 1998.
