Baton Rouge, LA (Sports Network) - Bethune-Cookman head football coach Brian
Jenkins is one of the six candidates for the same position at Southern
Southern athletics director Dr. William Broussard is scheduled to conduct a 30-
minute phone interview with six candidates this week before condensing the list
to as many as three who may make visits to the Southwestern Athletic Conference
Jenkins, a finalist for the 2012 Eddie Robinson Award, is widely considered a
rising star in the Division I coaching ranks. In three seasons at Bethune-
Cookman, the 41-year-old's teams have posted a 27-8 record, won two Mid-Eastern
Athletic Conference championships and made two FCS playoff appearances.
Also to be considered for the Southern position are the Jaguars' current
interim coach, Dawson Odums, who posted a 4-5 record after taking over for the
fired Stump Mitchell in mid-September; Alabama State special teams coordinator
John Hendrick; Nevada offensive line coach James Spady; and two other finalists
who did not wish for Southern to identify them Monday because their seasons
have not yet come to an end.
Broussard expects to introduce Southern's next head coach at a Southern board
of supervisors meeting Dec. 14.
