CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WUSA/WVIR) --  Charlottesville Police say a man tried to pull a 19-year-old University of Virginia student into his vehicle on Thursday night. The suspected attacker is now in police custody.

Twenty-six-year-old Matthew Rene Beaulieu is charged with abduction with the intent to defile, a class 2 felony, after the incident in the 2200 block of Stadium Road. Police say that a 19-year-old female UVA student was walking there shortly after midnight when she spotted a vehicle following her. The vehicle stopped and the driver got out. He ran toward the student and grabbed her. He then tried to pull her into his vehicle, say police.

Police say the young woman fought with him and he finally gave up and fled in his vehicle. She then called 911 and described the attacker and his car.

A police officer stopped a car fitting the description on Interstate 64 at Exit 120 and Beulieu was arrested and charged.

Beaulieu is being held without bond in the Charlottesville/Albemarle Regional Complex.

Police say that the young woman only suffered minor scrapes and bruises. She credited training from the Sexual Assault Resource Agency (SARA) through her sorority house on how to react in the case of an attempted sexual assault for being able to escape Thursday's incident.
