FREDERICK, Md. (WUSA) -- Frederick Police officials say a woman made a desperate leap from a moving vehicle to escape the man who raped her, and now they have her attacker in custody.

According to a press release from the Frederick Police Department, officers were flagged down Sunday night in the 500 block of N. East Street by a passerby. The passerby told police they had just picked up a female who had jumped out of a moving vehicle in a desperate attempt to escape her attacker. Officers talked to the victim who claimed she had just been raped by an unknown male suspect in the 100 block of E. South Street when she got out of her car after grocery shopping.

Police say the victim's injuries were consistent with being assaulted during the rape. She was treated and released from Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Frederick Police detectives responded to investigate the incident. According to the release, a crime scene was found in the 100 block of E. South Street and the Frederick Police Department's Crime Scene Unit responded to collect evidence.

The victim told investigators she was forced into her car by the suspect after the violent attack, he then drove her to the 500 block of N. East Street where she jumped from the vehicle. The suspect left the scene in her car.

Police detectives were able to identify a suspect by Monday afternoon with help from the community, family members, and friends of the victim. Witnesses reported to detectives that the suspect had been seen in the area of E. All Saints Street at S. Carroll Street around 1:00 p.m. Police say friends of the victim were able to chase the suspect from the area to the 100 block of S. Market Street. A scuffle ensued between the suspect and the group of civilians who had pursued him. During the altercation, the suspect received a stab wound to the back. He was then chased into a convenience store in the 100 block of Market Street and held at bay by the angry mob until police arrived at the scene.

The alleged rapist has been identified as Montrelle Denard Bowie of the 8300 block of Discovery Boulevard in Frederick. Bowie was arrested and taken to Frederick Police Headquarters for processing. Police say Bowie had to be transported to Frederick Memorial Hospital for treatment of the stab wound he sustained in the scuffle with the victim's friends and family. He was then taken to Frederick County Adult Detention Center.

Bowie is charged with numerous offenses, including 1st and 2nd degree rape, 1st and 2nd degree sex offense, carjacking, and kidnapping.
