WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- Consider this new risk like a digital form of kidnapping. Your computer and your private data held for ransom by hackers.

Hackers are taking control of computers. "Ransom" notes can read like this: for $3,000, you can get your computer unfrozen and your data back and you'll have to fork over $1,000 for each week you don't comply.

Randomware is a crime so pervasive, it has prompted the FBI to put out a warning. The Bureau says it's getting dozens of complaints each day. It's believed most are operating overseas, so tracking them down has become futile as well.

One reason some people fall for the scam is that the messages look like they're from the government, accusing users of things like child pornography.
